NO PENS DAY: Place Value Lesson (KS1)

This lesson focuses on both standard and flexible partitioning for 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Students are taken through an interactive lesson input and then encouraged to represent partitoned numbers using tiny blobs of colour using cotton buds and paint on their worksheets. This also helps with practise of fine motor skills for those who find holding and controlling a pen/pencil difficult (but guaranteed they’ll find this more fun than holding a pencil!)

This lesson focuses on measuring length and width using centimetres during the input and 'squares' for the activity. Students are taught about length and width before testing their understanding by following instructions to design a zoo. Different animals need different sized enclosures, and in order to ensure that no pens are used in this lesson, children will need to cut the enclosures to the right size using the squared paper, and then label by sticking the correct animal picture on top.
